Thanks to a collaborative effort between our High School College and Career Transition Counselor Danielle Harris, High School Instructional Coach Jenny Crawford, and the High School RISE class, Southeast Polk students had a unique opportunity to connect with healthcare and fitness professionals in the high school Commons during lunch. Hundreds of students joined in, finding it informative and enjoyable.
“We couldn’t have done this without them,” Crawford said, crediting the RISE class for promoting and facilitating the event.
This event was not a career fair—it was an amazing learning experience! Representatives from various organizations featured interactive stations where students got a taste of real-life tasks and asked questions like, “What do you do?” and “How can I get into this field?” A Hy-Vee dietitian challenged students to arrange drinks in order of sugar content (spoiler: soda had the most), while DMACC’s Medical Laboratory Technology booth provided a microscope to explore a sickle cell up close. Another station featured a wheel of questions about the human body, sparking both fun and learning. The respiratory therapy table allowed students to feel the difference between the lungs of a healthy person and the lungs of a smoker.
With punch cards in hand, students who visited at least three stations were entered into a raffle to win prizes like concession coupons, t-shirts, pens, and candy. We’re excited about a similar event to be held in the spring, which will focus on careers in Business and Media Arts.
A huge thank you to all of the healthcare and fitness professionals who took time out of their day to share their experiences and knowledge with our students – we have an amazing community!
